Artist's Description

This painting did not come together for a few years until the death of my grandmother. My grandmother was my rock, my friend, and a huge part of my life. After her death, my life was emotionally shattered. I was left with having to pick up the pieces and put them back together. No matter how hard I tried, the piece that held me together was no longer there. The pieces had to be put back in a different way, which was not normal and felt mixed up, just like the painting. All the pieces are still there; they are just in different places. Over time, what feels mixed up will once again feel normal until the next time the pieces are broken or one goes missing. The simple figure allows one to see one's reflection and experience the emotion I am trying to express, whether it be grief of a loved one or the joyful memories shared together. In addition, the simple figure moves the focus to the colors, the raw emotions that we sometimes do not have the words to express.

When I am not painting, I work with elementary students, sharing my passion for art with tomorrow's future leaders (and buyers of art!). Although my grandparent's kitchen table now is the center piece in my own kitchen, I have never forgotten the importance of expressing one's ideas and the intimate connection we make when creating and...
